Foundation of the Redeemed Christian Church of God
In July 1909, a son was born into the Akindayomi family in Ondo State, Nigeria. Though raised among idol worshippers, he sensed a higher power and longed to know “the God who created the earth and everyone on it.” This spiritual pursuit led him to the Church Missionary Society, where he was baptized in 1927. Still unfulfilled, he joined the Cherubim and Seraphim Church in 1931.
During this time, he began hearing a divine call: “You will be my servant.” Reluctant to accept it, he resisted for seven years, during which his business ventures failed and he fell into debt. Broken and dependent on God’s grace, he surrendered, praying, “Lord, I will go wherever you want me to go.” Confirmation came through scriptures—Jeremiah 1:4–10, Isaiah 41:10–13, and Romans 8:29–31—assuring him of divine provision, even without a salary.
He married in 1941 and continued worshipping with the Cherubim and Seraphim until 1947, when concerns arose over doctrinal deviations. By 1952, he felt led to leave and began a house fellowship at 9 Willoughby Street, Ebute-Metta, Lagos, called the Glory of God Fellowship. Starting with nine members, the fellowship grew rapidly as news of miracles spread.
In a divine vision, he saw the words “The Redeemed Christian Church of God” written on a blackboard—words he miraculously transcribed despite being unable to read or write. God revealed that this church would reach the ends of the earth and be prepared for Christ’s return. A covenant was established, echoing the Abrahamic promise: if members served faithfully and obeyed His Word, He would meet all their needs.
Thus, in 1952, the Redeemed Christian Church of God was born—commissioned to take the world for Christ. The church remained at Willoughby Street until relocating to its current headquarters at 1–5 Redemption Way, Ebute-Metta, Lagos.
